9 out of 10 Americans have mild to severe gum disease.
If you have symptoms of bleeding gums when you brush, persistent bad breath,
irritated gums, or tartar buildup, you may be at risk. Periodontal disease is
essentially the breakdown of the tissues that support teeth. After taking x-rays
and an examination, most cases of periodontal disease can be treated by a general
dentist. Gum disease cannot be treated just by brushing and flossing alone.
If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.
What causes periodontal disease?
Certain medications treating heart conditions, oral contraceptive pills, use
of tobacco products, poor hygiene habits, uncontrolled diabetes, are some possible
causes of periodontal disease. Your dentist can determine if you have gum disease
and explain the proper treatment. Most levels can be treated by a general dentist
along with home care instructions. In some cases, your dentist may refer you
to a periodontist for specialized care.
Never apply heat to your face after trauma.
If you experience a toothache or trauma to the face, applying a hot compress
can be dangerous. If infection is present, the heat can allow bacteria to flourish,
which can create more swelling and even restrict your airway. Instead, apply
a cold compress and see a dentist as soon as possible.
Teeth are designed to last a lifetime.
It's a myth to believe that wearing dentures is an inevitable part of your
future as you age. But with regular visits to the dentist, professional cleanings
or gum treatments, following a balanced diet and proper hygiene routines you
and your teeth can be inseparable. It's also very important to avoid smoking
and using other tobacco products, as they can also lead to gum disease.
